Dear Friends and Neighbors,
We celebrated Martin Luther King Jr. Day this week in the Legislature. This involves various floor speeches honoring a man whose legacy of hope extends through the generations. To watch those speeches, click here.
We're participating in a lot of work sessions and committees this week. In the House Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee, we had a great presentation on mega wildfires. You can watch that presentation, including some excellent video, by clicking here.
Stay tuned! – My online survey and telephone town hall
In an upcoming e-newsletter, I'll be sending you a link where you can participate in my online survey. This is your chance to let me know how you feel on certain issues we're dealing with in Olympia. I'll then share the results with you in subsequent updates. We'll also have more information on our upcoming 9th District telephone town hall meeting. I hope you'll be able to participate in both my online survey and our telephone town hall.
Small businesses and our rural economy
One of my goals is to improve our local business climate so that job creators can thrive in both the urban and rural areas.
This session, I'm cosponsoring legislation that has strong support from the National Federation of Independent Business. House Bill 1352 seeks to identify what specific rights or protections small-business owners have when undergoing a state audit, inspection or other agency enforcement action. The state will then set up a process to inform business owners of these rights and protections – sort of a Small Business Bill of Rights.
Another bill I'm cosponsoring, House Bill 1005, requires state agencies to justify the rules they already have in place and decreases their authority to create new ones, except in emergencies and with fish and wildlife regulations. As any small-business owner knows, the excessive rules employers face are a hindrance to job growth.
We had a great visit with the Garfield-Palouse robotic team this week as well. To learn more about the team, as well as watch their video from the 2016 World Championships, click here.
Thank you for reading my e-newsletter. Please forward it to family and friends. If you have any questions or concerns, or just want to express your thoughts on legislation or particular issues, please feel free to contact me.
