Dear Friends and Neighbors,
It is my honor to be back at the state Capitol in Olympia to serve and represent you and our neighbors across the 9th Legislative District. The first day of the 60-day session began this past Monday, Jan. 8. A record number of bills — more than 330 — were prefiled in the House before the session even got started, which indicates this will be a very busy two months in the Legislature.

In the Governor’s State of the State Address on Tuesday, he touted a legacy of success as he enters his last year in office. Unfortunately, many problems still face our state, from high crime and drugs, homelessness, high taxes and gas prices that make Washington unaffordable, students’ test scores dropping in math and reading, and working parents finding it impossible to access affordable childcare. We have lots of work ahead in this session to fix Washington.
I will be doing radio interviews, writing local newspaper columns, and sending out weekly email updates to keep you informed of our work. But your involvement is also important to the 2024 legislative session. Here’s how you can participate:
- Sign up for our daily e-news clipping service, The Capitol Buzz, with articles from around the state.
- Visit our legislative news aggregator, The Ledger, to see the latest legislative news stories.
- Watch TVW online for committee hearings, floor debates, weekly legislative programs, and more.
- Visit the Washington State House Republican website, including our priorities page, and my website for the latest legislative news and actions.
- Listen to my weekly radio podcast, Capitol Report, on my Soundcloud page.
- Finally, visit the Washington State Legislature website to find bills, committee reports and schedules, information about floor action and so much more.

Also, I invite you to call my Olympia office at (360) 786-7844 or email me at joe.schmick@leg.wa.gov. Please keep me informed if you plan to visit the Capitol so that, hopefully, we can meet and hear what’s on your mind.
Again, thank you for the honor of allowing me to serve and represent you.
Sincerely,

Joe Schmick
