Spokane Valley student serves as House page for 9th District lawmakers

Kinyon Gable, a sophomore at University High School in Spokane Valley, recently served as a legislative page in the Washington State House of Representatives. She was sponsored by Rep. Joe Schmick, R-Colfax, and Rep. Mary Dye, R-Pomeroy.

“Kinyon did an outstanding job during her week in Olympia,” said Schmick. “The page program gives students a front-row seat to the legislative process, and it is always encouraging to see young people take an interest in how state government works.”

“Kinyon brought professionalism and enthusiasm to her work in the House,” added Dye. “Serving as a page is a unique opportunity to learn about leadership, responsibility, and public service.”

During her week at the Capitol, Kinyon assisted lawmakers by delivering messages and documents to legislative offices, committee meetings, and the House chamber during floor sessions. Aside from lawmakers, pages are among the few individuals permitted on the House floor while the Legislature is in session, offering them a rare opportunity to observe debate and interact with legislators from across the state.

In addition to their daily duties, pages attend Legislative Page School for two hours each day to learn about the structure and function of Washington state government. The curriculum includes interactive lessons, guest speakers, and a mock committee hearing. Pages also receive a stipend of $65 per day for their service.

Kinyon, 15, is the daughter of Kirsten K. Gable of Spokane Valley. She enjoys playing volleyball and golf, skiing, and wake surfing. She is also interested in history and biomedical sciences.
